Rangers Miss Out On Another January Target With £5m Deal Now Imminent

Rangers could officially miss out on former Hibernian left-back Josh Doig today with the Hellas Verona ace expected to complete a £5 million move to Serie A rivals Sassuolo.

Philippe Clement’s side appeared to have been gifted a second chance when talks between Josh Doig and Marseille collapsed a couple of days ago. But if a breakdown in negotiations with the Ligue 1 giants left the door open a crack for Rangers, then Sassuolo look set to slam it shut once and for all before tossing away the key.

Doig, Tuttomercatoweb report, is now ‘about to move to Sassuolo’ for an initial fee of just over £5 million.

The Edinburgh-born defender, who started his career at Hearts before making his name at capital city rivals Hibs, became another Scottish starlet to up sticks and head for Italy in the summer of 2022 and, like Lewis Ferguson and Liam Henderson, he has done his reputation no harm in mainland Europe.

Doig – like the Aston Villa-linked Cyril Ngonge – has been a bright spark in a difficult season for relegation-threatened Hellas. The departure of both players will be a major blow to Hellas’ survival hopes, Doig on his way to Sassuolo and Ngonge edging closer to Scudetto holders Napoli.

With Ridvan Yilmaz maybe on his way out of Glasgow, Rangers are scouring the market for a number of potential replacements. Finding one, however, is proving to be easier said than done.

Left-back search goes on

Kai Wagner recently renewed his contract at MLS outfit Philadelphia Union. David Jurasek, Benfica’s £12 million benchwarmer, is on his way to the Bundesliga with Hoffenheim. Liverpool also rebuffed an approach for ex-Dundee loanee Owen Beck amid concerns over the fitness of Andy Robertson and Kostas Tsimikas.

Cameron Pring of Bristol City is another option. The play-off seeking Robins are highly unlikely to be open to offers, however, particularly after Pring’s ‘immense’ display during the FA Cup triumph over West Ham United on Tuesday.
