West Ham United Get No Wins As Mohammed Kudus Argument Emerges – Finance Expert

We’re delighted to welcome football finance expert Dr Daniel Plumley as our exclusive West Ham United columnist. Each week he’ll be giving his views on the biggest talking points at the London Stadium…

Dan Plumley has insisted that West Ham are losing out in a “who-wins” scenario with Ghana after their argument before the African Cup of Nations.

Mohammed Kudus missed the Brighton game to travel for the competition and even started his trip over there in rehabilitation from an injury.

The finance expert shared that clubs do not receive compensation for releasing their players in the middle of the season, and West Ham just has to deal with it.

“To the best of my knowledge, there is no similar package that we have in the World Cup with AFCON,” he exclusively told West Ham Zone.

“You are in that with the players you have got, and the bigger issue with AFCON is the timing of the tournament if you look at the EUROs as an example, they are all in the summer so it is kind of more accepted in that regard.

“If they pick up injuries there, there is more time to rehabilitate and get them back into the club set-up for the start of the season.

“I think the challenge with AFCON is that it’s right in the middle and that doesn’t help the club or country, as the countries don’t want the players to be injured before they go and the clubs want them in the squad for the January fixture, so it’s something we have to be aware of in the bigger picture.

“There are, in a who-wins scenario, West Ham don’t get many wins in that regard, they’re going to lose the player and there’s no compensation for losing that player.

“It’s not something we can change unless we change the structure of AFCON and move it to the summer, unfortunately, it’s just one of the things the club have to deal with and again, you go in with your eyes open with the players you’re signing.”
