Ally McCoist is happy to see Kalvin Phillips swap Manchester City for West Ham as he reacted to the breaking transfer news live on air.
The talkSPORT broadcaster read out the update that Phillips is now close to joining West Ham on loan during the Breakfast show on Tuesday [23 January, 07:20am].
McCoist believes the move is exactly what Phillips needs to kick-start his career after a frustrating time of things since joining City from Leeds United 18 months ago.
“It makes sense. I think it’d be a great move,” McCoist said. “I can’t remember, I swear to God, a manager making it so blatantly obvious that a player is not for him.”
Co-host Andy Townsend added: “These loan deals now are very complex. Years ago it could be done in the space of a few hours.
“But he’s got to get going – it’s absolutely the right thing to do.”
Two Prem starts
Quite why it has not worked out for Phillips at the Etihad Stadium is anyone’s guess. As McCoist says, Guardiola just simply does not fancy him.
The central midfielder was brilliant for Leeds in the Premier League a couple of seasons ago and lit up the most recent Euros with England.
Through no real fault of his own, Phillips’ stock has fallen alarmingly since his switch to Manchester in July 2022.
Not helped by a niggling injury issue that also meant he barely featured at the World Cup, Phillips has started just two Premier League games for City.
That includes zero starts in the competition this season, but he will now get the chance to show exactly what he is all about in a West Ham shirt.
It may only be a loan deal for now, but hopefully something can be agreed further down the line if he stars at London Stadium.
