With the Capitals keeping half of Kuznetsov’s $7.8 million average yearly value following his trade to the Carolina Hurricanes, the contract termination is immensely beneficial to their salary cap situation. Even if Kuznetsov chooses to continue in the NHL, the Capitals will not be responsible for his previous deal. In addition to Kuznetsov’s cap relief, if Oshie joins Backstrom on LTIR for the entire season, an additional $5.75 million becomes available, increasing the Capitals’ capacity to acquire a key forward. This, however, may not be confirmed until later in training camp.

Laine.However, the situation with Laine remains complex. The Blue Jackets are currently in a holding pattern with Laine, who is still in the NHL/NHLPA Player Assistance Program and will most likely not be traded until he is released. Rosen implies that once that problem is resolved, the Capitals are expected to be in the market for a trade, taking advantage of the cap space created by Kuznetsov’s departure. The Capitals have already strengthened their squad with the arrivals of Pierre-Luc Dubois and Andrew Mangiapane, both of whom are anticipated to play major roles in the top six.
