Visma DS Downplays Van Aert’s Time-Trial Hopes at Volta ao Algarve: “Not a Priority Right Now”
Wout van Aert’s ambitions in the time trial at the upcoming Volta ao Algarve have been downplayed by his Visma | Lease a Bike sports director, who insists that the Belgian star’s main focus is elsewhere.
Van Aert, known for his versatility across disciplines, is set to make his European stage racing debut in Portugal after starting his season at the Clásica de Almería. While the 24.2km individual time trial on Stage 4 could suit his powerful engine, Visma’s management is not placing a strong emphasis on the result.
“It’s not a priority right now,” a Visma DS told the media. “Of course, Wout is a great time-trialist, but at this point in the season, we are looking at his overall progression and building his form for the bigger goals ahead.”
The Dutch squad has been clear that Van Aert’s early-season racing program is primarily geared toward preparing for the spring classics, including Strade Bianche, Milan-San Remo, and the Tour of Flanders. With the time trial not being a major objective, the team may prioritize testing equipment, pacing strategies, or simply maintaining race rhythm rather than targeting the win.
Still, Van Aert remains a strong contender for the stage victory if he chooses to push himself. The time trial features rolling terrain and could provide an excellent gauge of his form ahead of the classics campaign.
While expectations are being managed by his team, Van Aert’s natural competitiveness might still see him deliver a strong performance. Whether he goes all-in for the win or treats it as a stepping stone toward bigger goals, fans will be eager to see how the Belgian star fares in his first major test of the season.
