Novak Djokovic Withdraws from ATP Finals, Prioritizes Health and Future Goals
Novak Djokovic has officially announced that he will not be competing in the upcoming ATP Finals in Turin, citing health concerns and a need to refocus his goals for 2025. After an intense season that included an Olympic gold but fell short of Grand Slam victories, Djokovic indicated that maintaining his physical fitness is now his primary concern as he ages and faces younger competition.
The decision came after a limited tournament schedule in 2024, which included early exits in key tournaments and a string of injuries, notably a knee issue. Former British player and analyst Greg Rusedski remarked that Djokovic’s absence might be the best choice for him, as rest and recovery could be crucial to staying competitive in the future. “Health is your wealth,” Rusedski emphasized, suggesting Djokovic’s extended off-season could set him up to compete at full strength next year.
This withdrawal marks a shift in Djokovic’s career focus. The 24-time Grand Slam champion noted that he’s now less concerned with accumulating ranking points or even winning ATP titles outside major tournaments. Having achieved his Olympic goal, Djokovic has set his sights on Grand Slam titles and national representation rather than end-of-season titles, which he has already won seven times.
Rusedski also suggested Djokovic consider hiring a new high-level coach, emphasizing the benefit of fresh strategic insight as Djokovic competes with rising stars like Carlos Alcaraz and Jannik Sinner. As Djokovic looks ahead to 2025, fans and analysts alike are watching closely to see how he approaches the next phase of his legendary career.
