After defeating South Sydney and Balmain in back-to-back games, the One New Zealand Warriors will play Illawarra in Sunday’s sixth-round Harold Matthews Cup match at Pukekohe’s Navigation Homes Stadium at 10:00 a.m. for a chance to climb the ladder.
The TJ Ashford-coached team lost their opening games in the under-17 league against Sydney Roosters and Parramatta, two of the top five teams. However, they have improved significantly since then, winning narrowly against the Rabbitohs (22-17) and the Balmain Tigers (16-4).
With two points from their bye, they now sit 10th on six points but level with sixth-placed Newcastle.
Making his mark in the wins has been loose forward Lennox Tuiloma who had a double against the Rabbitohs and powered his way over for another try against the Tigers.
The Steelers sit 13th in the 17-team competition with one win from the four games they’ve played.
