Tadej Pogačar wins Montreal Grand Prix

Slovenian cyclist Tadej Pogačar of UAE Team Emirates won the 2024 Grand Prix Cycliste de Montréal with a commanding solo attack in the final 24 kilometers. Held on a challenging 209.1 km circuit through Montréal, the race featured steep climbs like Côte Camillien-Houde and Côte de Polytechnique, which played a pivotal role in Pogačar’s victory. He crossed the finish line in 5 hours, 28 minutes, and 15 seconds, 24 seconds ahead of Pello Bilbao (Bahrain Victorious), while Julian Alaphilippe (Soudal Quick-Step) secured third place. Pogačar’s strategic and powerful ride earned him his second Montreal victory, having also won in 2022.

The race, part of the UCI WorldTour, required the riders to tackle 4,573 meters of elevation, making it a true test of endurance and strength. Pogačar seized his opportunity on the penultimate climb of the Côte de Polytechnique, leaving his rivals behind. Bilbao and Alaphilippe attempted to chase, but Pogačar’s lead proved insurmountable.

With this win, Pogačar further cements his place among the elite cyclists of the world, adding to his already illustrious career that includes multiple Grand Tour victories. His ability to dominate in such demanding one-day races highlights his versatility and resilience. The victory also boosts UAE Team Emirates’ standings in the WorldTour, adding another major win to their 2024 season.

The top ten finishers included riders like Maxim Van Gils (Lotto Dstny), Ion Izagirre (Cofidis), and Canada’s own Michael Woods, who finished eighth.
