Sir Alex Ferguson Had David Beckham Remove His Favorite Shirt Number, Which Isn’t Number Seven

According to David Beckham, when he was a player for Manchester United, Sir Alex Ferguson took away his favorite shirt number.

For the majority of his time at Old Trafford, Beckham wore the recognizable number seven shirt, carrying on the tradition started by players like George Best, Bryan Robson, and Eric Cantona.

In fact, the majority of United supporters will undoubtedly bring up Beckham in conversation if you bring up the number seven shirt right now.

Shortly after Cantona’s football retirement, he inherited the shirt, which he kept until his departure from Old Trafford in 2003.

However, some people might not be aware that Beckham had actually worn the number 10 shirt following Mark Hughes’ departure from the team during the 1996–1997 season.

During that season, he scored his famous goal against Wimbledon on the first day of play, from the halfway line.

Ferguson immediately replaced Cantona with Teddy Sheringham, giving him Beckham’s number 10 shirt in the process.

“I recall my phone ringing while I was on vacation in Malta. Teddy Sheringham, who we recently signed, said, “Hey, this is the boss.”

“This is different, boss, I thought to myself. “We’re taking the number 10 and we’re signing Teddy Sheringham,” he declared.

“And I was like, ‘No boss, it doesn’t matter; I had a great season in this number 10’. David, I’ll see you in a few weeks.

“It was that. In one of my best seasons ever, the number 10 was taken away from me.”

But happily, Beckham exhaled a sigh of relief when he realized he was going to get the number seven shirt. Additionally, he performed admirably while donning it.

Beckham said he reluctantly gave up his favorite number in an interview with Classic Football Shirts.

“It was amazing because Mark Hughes was one of the players I always looked up to,” he said in his explanation.

Mark Hughes was one of the players I always looked up to, so it was incredible. Wearing the number 10 was therefore very special to me.
