Forest signed Montiel on loan from La Liga during the summer transfer window. Since joining the club, the World Cup winner has made just 14 appearances and provided three assists.
This week, the Reds were docked four points for violating financial fair play. It’s no secret that Forest will have to cut their cloth appropriately in the transfer market this summer.
Sevilla is concerned Forest will not be signing. Gonzalo Montiel
This comes down to Forest’s financing agreement, which includes a condition allowing them to permanently purchase Montiel. If the Argentine makes so many Premier League appearances, the Reds will owe Sevilla £9 million.
According to Vamos Mi Sevilla, Victor Orta is concerned that Forest may be unable to sign Montiel this summer because the club has been deducted points and may need to trade a player.
The 26-year-old hasn’t performed poorly when called upon. He was outstanding in victories over Newcastle and Manchester United over Christmas, keeping Neco Williams out of the lineup.
He’s not played in the Premier League since February and picked up an injury in the FA Cup replay against Bristol City. Now, it remains to be seen if he will play for Forest again.
Forest surely won’t sign defender now
With Forest now under pressure to make sure they reach the PSR threshold next season, it feels highly unlikely that Montiel will be signed on a permanent basis.
Although the player has done a decent job under Nuno Espirito Santo, clearly this latest injury has set him back.
Indeed, the mandatory requirement in terms of the number of games looks unlikely to be met – not least because Neco Williams has made the right-back position his own.
Spending money will only be likely in the summer if the Reds can sell players first. As a result, forking out £9 million for another right back – one who hasn’t played much for the club – looks an unlikely scenario for Forest.
