We regret to inform you that former Fitzroy footballer Les Hughson Jr passed away on Thursday, April 4, at the age of 85.

We regret to advise you all that former Fitzroy player Les Hughson Jr. passed away on Thursday 4 April at the age of 85.

Hughson played 28 games with Fitzroy from 1958-62 before suffering a serious knee injury which forced him into an early retirement from playing. He was later appointed as the club’s official runner.

He was the 746th player to represent the Club in a senior match and wore the Number 8 guernsey throughout his playing days.

Hughson was part of a famous football family at the Club. His father Les Hughson Snr played 73 senior VFL matches (15 with Fitzroy) with five separate clubs and his uncle Mick Hughson played 93 games with Fitzroy.

He was the nephew of inaugural Brisbane Lions Hall of Fame member Fred Hughson, who was Captain-Coach of Fitzroy in their last ever VFL premiership in 1944. Fred’s son Denis Hughson (Les Jr’s cousin) also played a single senior game for the Club in 1965.

The Club extends its sincerest condolences to the Hughson family at this difficult time.

Please ensure that any Club records/databases are updated to reflect Hughson’s passing.
