Max Verstappen and Red Bull are in the middle of a worrying run of form
Jacques Villeneuve believes that the absence of Adrian Newey’s presence in the Red Bull garage has been ‘really detrimental’ to Max Verstappen’s title chances. Since the 65-year-old’s departure was confirmed, the reigning champions’ form has taken a major hit.
Red Bull head into the Azerbaijan Grand Prix without a win in the last six races, and the reigning champions have collected just two podiums during that period. The impact of that drop-off has been disastrous in their bid for both the Drivers’ Championship and Constructors’ Championship.
Without the legendary aerodynamicist’s input, Red Bull have struggled to get on top of the issues facing the RB20. In a bid to recover some performance, multiple changes and upgrade packages have come and gone, but the Milton Keynes-based team are still losing ground to McLaren.
Discussing the impact of Newey’s departure with Casasdeapuestas.bet, Villeneuve said: “Newey not being around is really detrimental. It is easy to get out of that window I was talking about and never be able to get back in.
“It is a fine line. Once Newey left Williams in 1997 halfway through the season, the team struggled. They got completely lost and it took a while to get back in that window. That could well be what has happened at Red Bull.”
