The Boston Celtics are worried about Kristaps Porzingis’s tendency to get hurt and Al Horford’s age. According to Greg Swartz of Bleacher Report, getting a big like Andre Drummond from the Chicago Bulls could ease some of their fears.
Swartz wrote on December 4 about one move that he thought every NBA team should make. Here are his ideas:
The Celtics get Drummond.
The Bulls get a second-round pick in 2023.
They are only ranked 17th in the league in offensive rebounds (28.5%), though, and Swartz wrote that the team would have to watch how Kristaps PorziņĿis (durability) and Al Horford (37 years old) are used all season. Since Drummond makes $3.3 million a year, he can be bought cheap because of the $6.2 million trade exception made possible by the Grant Williams sign-and-trade. The NBA would have the best offensive rebounding rate if Drummond played enough minutes to make the cut. His mark is 20.7 percent.
Drummond used to be an all-star and lead the NBA in rebounds four times, but those days are long gone. For the past few years, he’s been used as a backup. He would have flaws, but he would also help the Celtics with one of their weaknesses.
Named one of the top three Celtics targets is Andre Drummond.
In November, another Bleacher Report writer said the Celtics should try to get Drummond.
The Celtics might want to sign him if they don’t want to spend a lot of money on center backup. “His lack of range on both ends of the court lowers his value in today’s game, but he’s still a good rebounder who can finish around the basket and defend the paint.”
His writing said, “He might be the kind of player Boston buys to keep behind emergency glass.” This team might get more out of Drummond than Kornet in a playoff game against a strong low-post player—and there could be a few on its way to a title.” That protection alone would make Drummond’s deal cost, which would be very low, worth it.
Of the Celtics’ 20 games, Porzingis has missed five. Starting on November 26, he missed four in a row. On the other hand, Horford has been on the front end of both of the Celtics’ back-to-backs this season. If either player misses a lot of time, Drummond would add backup.
At the end of what NBC Sports Chicago’s K.C. Johnson called a “season on the road to nowhere” on November 29, Drummond “would draw interest” if the Bulls cut him.
You could trade Caruso or even Andre Drummon, who league sources say would be interesting, if Bulls executive vice president Arturos Karnišovas “really wants to tear his situation down to the studs,” Johnson wrote.
A source says the Celtics will be “active” in the trade market.
Shams Charania of The Athletic said he thought the Celtics would look to trade before the February 8 trade deadline.
“I expect the Celtics to be active in the trade market as we get closer to February, to try to see if they can beef up their bench rotation.”@ShamsCharania’s biggest concern for the Celtics is late game execution, what kind of player are they missing? 🤔
“The Celtics gave up a couple first-round picks in that Jrue Holiday trade. They still have a few first-round picks leftover. I expect the Celtics to be active in the trade market as we get closer to February to try to see if they can beef up their bench rotation,” Charania said December 5 on FanDuel TV’s “Run It Back.”
