Rangers Ready To Sign Oscar Cortes In The January Transfer Window As Early Reports Are Disputed.

Rangers are “keen” on signing Oscar Cortes before the window shuts but reports that he is already in-bound for Glasgow are “wide of the mark”, according to Chris Jack.

The journalist reported via Twitter on 28 January that the Colombian is “poised to become the third signing” of the month for Philippe Clement, but added in his story for Rangers Review that “as it stands” no deal has yet been “finalised”.

Jack says that Rangers are however “very much in the running” to land the 20-year-old after he was released from his international squad to return to France in order to deal with an exit from Lens.

After loan deals for Fabio Silva from Wolves and Mohamed Diomande from FC Nordsjaelland, with the latter expected to be made permanent in the summer, Cortes “could now put pen-to-paper to become the latest arrival as Clement gears up for a shot at the Premiership title in the coming months”.

Sooner or later

It looks like from the Colombian side it is viewed as a done deal but in Scotland the formalities still need to actually be dealt with.

There would seem to be a very high chance that the youngster is set to join Clement’s squad imminently therefore, barring an unforeseen issue arising in the final negotiations or a medical.

Despite being the same age as Alex Lowry who is set to leave the club on loan again it has to be assumed that Cortes is being pursued to contribute to the first-team this term if his expected move is to be a loan in the first instance.

With Abdallah Sima ruled out for what may prove to be the rest of the season the wide options are now thin as well as the striking department.

Ross McCausland has made a breakthrough this term, but otherwise it is the inconsistent Rabbi Matondo and the repeatedly exit-linked Scott Wright available to fill those roles.

According to Transfermarkt Cortes has only seen 40 minutes of first-team action so far this season at Lens, scoring and assisting once each in Ligue 1, so he is surely not the finished article.

So if Nils Koppen is able to add him to Clement’s squad it the speed with which is ready to make an impact will be a key question.
