Rangers are reportedly aiming to ward off any transfer interest in Borna Barisic this month by offering him fresh contract terms.
The 31-year-old left-back is out of contract in the summer and given that he is in the final six months of his current Ibrox deal, he is free to negotiate his future with other clubs.
He’s been linked with the likes of Aston Villa and Roma this season, with Dinamo Zagreb apparently one of the latest to enter the fray.
Barisic was spotted training on his own yesterday at Rangers’ La Manga training camp and that has fuelled speculation over his future.
However, that actually may be down to the fact he is on a slightly different training regime to the rest of the squad due to the recent injury he picked up.
Despite all of the speculation surrounding a potential Rangers exit, the Ibrox club are now – according to Football Scotland – actively seeking to negotiate a new contract with Barisic.
Fresh Rangers deal for Barisic?
Football Scotland’s report states that approaches have been made by clubs in Ligue 1, La Liga and Serie A for Barisic’s services as they seek a cut-price deal.
EFL Championship side Leeds United have also been credited with making an offer for the full-back but it is being said Rangers want to keep hold of Barisic this month.
Ridvan Yilmaz appears to be closing in on a £3m switch to Hellas Verona—others are also in the running—and that would leave Rangers short in the left-back position.
And if Philippe Clement is at risk of losing Barisic to Leeds sooner rather than later, it would make sense to do everything to keep him at Ibrox.
We don’t want to be in a position where Ridvan leaves and Barisic is at risk of departing without having someone else coming to soften the blow, so it seems Rangers are sensibly trying to cover themselves here.
