Rangers Are Expected To Sign A ‘Quality’ Ace In January, According To Pundits

Rangers are heavily favored to sign ‘quality’ Ryan Kent in the January transfer window.

According to Alan Rough, Ryan Kent is a “quality” player who the Rangers are “not going to say no” to in the January window if they can bring him back.

On The Football Show on November 24, the PLZ Soccer pundit stated that Philippe Clement may even get the English winger to be more consistent, and was joined by both Tam McManus and Lee McCulloch in supporting the move amid reports in Turkey that the Fenerbahce man could be on the move in January [Yaz Sabuncuolu, 15 November].

After leaving Ibrox on a free transfer in the summer the 27-year-old has struggled to settle at the Istanbul giants, and McManus believes the Light Blues would take him back “in a minute” to give the fans a “big boost”.

McCulloch said (16m 30s): “I think it would be positive, yes. How realistic, I don’t know. But his pace and skill, and he’s scored some important goals, so I think that he’d be a player that would enhance the depth of the squad, definitely.”

Rough added: “He’s a quality player, there’s no doubt about it. We saw what he can do when he turns it on. The biggest criticism of him was it wasn’t consistent. It might be under a new manager, he might be able to get something out of him that they never got before.

“Any quality that’s about, if it’s feasible financially, they’re not going to say no.”

Finally McManus said: “Possibly [Abdallah Sima is already doing his job]. They’ve got [Sam] Lammers there who can play that role. I think [Kent] would be a better option than him but Rangers paid a lot of money for him.

Danilo can play on the wing or through the middle. Scott Wright seems to be back in the picture, he’s come back in, but I think if you can get Ryan Kent back and it was financially viable for the club I think you would take him in a minute.

“He was very good for Rangers. Last season he wasn’t particularly great but there was a lot of talk over his future that might have affected him, but if you can get him back on a deal, maybe to the end of the season on loan, that would give Rangers fans a big boost to be honest.”

Surely not

In light of Rangers being short of options on the flanks this season and Kent’s departure not working out for him there is some logic in turning the clock back as a marriage of convenience.

But unless Michael Beale’s exit and Clement’s arrival has changed the landscape entirely it would be a surprise for it to actually happen.

If Kent at his incisive best was available at a knock-down price and he was ready to have an instant impact then perhaps the circumstances would fall right in Rangers’ lap.

But when he’s had a lack of football in Turkey through the first half of this season to follow on from one of his weakest as a Gers player last term that is far from certain.

Clearly too many of the summer signings have failed to work out but unless Clement is wholly in favour of getting one of the old guard back in it seems like heading in the wrong direction.

It might be argued that Leon Balogun, brought back on a free transfer by Beale in the summer after a season away, has proven the wisdom in reversing certain exits, but in terms of the finances and the profile it feels like a different situation.

Clement shut down speculation when asked directly to say that he wouldn’t address any rumours about players not at the club [Rangers Review, 24 November], and if it were only a six-month loan for Kent it would seem to block Ross McCausland’s recent development for no long-term gain.

But clearly there is some support for the idea so perhaps stranger things have happened.
