Rangers ‘Enter Race’ With Kaizer Chiefs And Dutch Side For Sweden-Based South African Winger But Fans Beg Star To Stay

RANGERS could be set to do some SIRIUS business in this month’s transfer market, according to a South African report.

Phillipe Clement has already recruited Fabio Silva to his ranks and has been linked with a healthy stream of speculative signings as he aims to strengthen his squad.

Scott McKenna, Michy Batshuayi, Milion Manhoef and old boy Ryan Kent have all been mentioned with only one loan deal being concluded so far.Rangers ‘enter race’ with Kaizer Chiefs and Dutch side for Sweden-based  South African winger but fans beg star to stay | The Scottish Sun

But a new name has entered the running, according to a source in his homeland.

And it’s one South African fans have branded the rainbow nation’s ‘best midfielder abroad’.

That is 23-year-old Tashreeq Matthews, but Gers do face two rivals for his signature if they follow through on their initial interest.

The South African under-20 international is currently in Sweden with IK Sirius – but hit 10 goals in 30 appearances in the country’s top flight Allsvenskan last season.

They’re currently in their close season but both AZ Alkmaar in Holland and Kaizer Chiefs in South Africa are keeping tabs before the new season starts and, according to SNL24, Gers have joined the chase.

He operated across the front line, playing on the left wing and just behind the strikers for the majority of the season – but did help out on the right side and even up front where he scored twice in three striker appearances.

As a teenager he moved to Borussia Dortmund from Ajax Cape Town in his homeland and the Germans loaned him out to both FC Utrecht and Helsingborgs.

He moved to Sweden permanently with Varbergs and signed for Sirius in 2022 where his value and reputation has soared.

On his TikTok account @tassiematthews17 the fans have begged the midfielder to stay with the Swedes, who finished eighth last term.

One wrote: “Plz stay at sirius you are so good.”

Another added: “This guy needs a call up for Bafana ppl. Every video I have see he scores.”

A third said: “SA’s best midfielder abroad 100pc.”

the Gers don’t have a great recent record with South African stars.

Bongani Zungu arrived at Rangers with a healthy reputation but was caught up in a covid row and was a squad outsider under Steven Gerrard.

Before him came Dean Furman who also struggled to make an impact at Ibrox.

But the Gers do boast club icons Johnny Hubbard and Don Kichenbrand in their history.
