West Ham United manager David Moyes is under real pressure right now, and all his problems are of his own making.
David Moyes has worked wonders at West Ham over the past four years, but the general consensus is that he has reached his full potential, and is incapable of taking us to the next level.
The Hammers board are said to be seriously unimpressed right now, after the 6-0 humiliation at the hands of Arsenal on Sunday.
We were absolutely flying at the end of December after we had just beaten Arsenal 2-0 at the Emirates, but we’ve fallen off a cliff since then.
Moyes failed to make any attacking reinforcements in the January transfer window, and his squad is now stretched to the limit.
Another big issue with the Scot is the fact that he’s been playing our best two players completely out of position pretty much all season long.
Jarrod Bowen and Lucas Paqueta have been played out of position by Moyes pretty much all season long.
The 27-year-old Englishman has been utilised as a centre-forward, when he is quite clearly so much better out on the right-wing.
Some may say it’s very much a case of needs must, but in my view that’s on Moyes. He’s had more than enough chances to sign a striker who suits his system but has failed at every opportunity.
Then we come to Paqueta. Moyes continues to play him out wide on the left when it’s obvious to see he’s at his best when playing in the number 10 role, making things happen with his creativity and guile.
I totally get that the 26-year-old has forged an impressive relationship with Emerson Palmieri down our left hand flank, but at the same time I feel like the former Lyon man is being wasted as a left winger.
The really concerning thing about all of this is that David Moyes will undoubtedly continue to play both West Ham players out of position for the remainder of the season.
I just don’t get the Scot’s strange obsession with putting square pegs in round holes. He has even been using right-back Ben Johnson as a left winger recently! There is no need for it at all
Looking forward to the summer, Moyes needs to sign a proper left winger and a proven centre-forward. Then he can stop playing our best two players in positions that don’t actually suit them one little bit!
