NYY NEWS: Sterling says goodbye ….

Around the Empire: Yankees news – 4/16/24

Yankees’ radio broadcaster John Sterling retires; Anthony Volpe shows signs of breakout; catching prospect Agustin Ramirez is turning heads; former Yankee pitcher Ken Holtzman passes away.

MLB.com | Bryan Hoch: Yesterday saw the announcement that Yankee broadcaster John Sterling was going to retire with immediate effect. The longtime radio voice has been with the team since 1989, and his distinctive “The Yankees win!” call has been the soundtrack to five World Series titles. Sterling wasn’t always everyone’s cup of tea, but he leaves an undeniable void in the broadcast booth.

Baseball Prospectus | Daniel R. Epstein: While his defense rated well enough to win him a gold glove, Anthony Volpe’s offense did not quite live up to potential in his rookie season. However a year later, he appears to have taken a large step forward in that department.

New York Daily News | Gary Phillips: Down in the minor leagues, catcher Agustin Ramirez has turned some heads with an impressive start to the season. The 21st ranked player in the Yankees’ system according to MLB pipeline possesses some impressive power, with six home runs on the season already.

MLB Trade Rumors | Darragh McDonald: Former Yankee pitcher Ken Holtzman passed away recently at the age of 78. While most known for his time with the Cubs and Athletics, Holtzman spent three years with the Yankees, and helped them to the 1977 World Series title, although he did not appear in the series.
