News Now: Yankees injury report: DJ LeMahieu practices live batting, Jasson Dominguez will start at designated hitter for Single-A Tampa next week.

Prior to Saturday’s game against the Tampa Bay Rays, Yankees manager Aaron Boone delivered a couple injury updates, including the status of top prospect Jasson Dominguez and veteran DJ LeMahieu.

Dominguez moves to DH in Single-A.
Boone provided an exciting update on Jasson Dominguez’s route return to the major leagues following Tommy John surgery on September 20, 2023. The 21-year-old will begin his rehab assignment with the Single-A Tampa Tarpons on Tuesday. According to Boone, Dominguez will DH for the first two weeks of the assignment before returning to the field.

Dominguez remains the Yankees’ top prospect, but has dropped to No. 37 overall in the MLB Pipeline rankings.

During the 2023 season, he hit.265 with 22 doubles, 15 home runs, 76 RBI, and 83 walks in 118 games split between Double-A (109 games) and Triple-A (nine games). Dominguez was subsequently moved to the majors in September, hitting.258 with a double and four home runs in eight games with the Yankees before suffering a ruptured UCL.

On May 7, Boone stated that Dominguez has “been doing live BPs and all of his defensive stuff” over the previous couple weeks. The outfielder began throwing in early February and swinging off a tee before the end of the month.

LeMahieu takes live BP.
DJ LeMahieu, who has yet to play this season due to a foot ailment suffered during spring training, joined the team in Florida and took live batting practice against JT Brubaker at the team’s headquarters in Tampa.

On May 9, Boone stated: “The plan is for him to come with us and continue ramping up this weekend.”

LeMahieu appeared to be on track to return to the squad a few weeks ago, but he experienced a setback while rehabbing with Double-A Somerset. After only one inning, the infielder was removed from the game due to right foot pain.
