All the latest Newcastle United team news, injury updates and predicted XI ahead of their Premier League game against Manchester United.
Newcastle United will be looking to leapfrog Manchester United in the Premier League table when the two sides meet at St. James’ Park on Saturday night. The Magpies currently sit one place and one point behind the Red Devils, and a win on Tyneside this weekend could see them move up to fifth, depending on results elsewhere.
Eddie Howe’s men were emphatic in their last league outing, beating Chelsea 4-1 in a resounding performance, with goals from Alexander Isak, Jamaal Lascelles, Joelinton, and Anthony Gordon proving far too much for their visitors. Fate conspired against them in the Champions League in midweek, however, with a controversial Paris Saint-Germain penalty denying them a famous victory in the French capital to leave their hopes of qualification for the knockout rounds hanging by a thread.
As for Manchester United, the Red Devils are currently on a run of three successive victories in the Premier League, and saw off Everton in comfortable fashion last weekend, partially thanks to an Alejandro Garnacho wonder goal. Like Newcastle, however, they were forced to settle for a draw in Europe in midweek, with Andre Onana largely at fault as Galatasaray fought back to claim a 3-3 draw in Turkey.
But how will both sides line up in the North East this weekend? We’ve taken a look at their respective team news and predicted XIs below…
Newcastle United Team News
Newcastle were missing a whole host of players in Paris in midweek, and their personnel woes are expected to continue for the most part this weekend. The Magpies are set to be without a number of key players, including Sandro Tonali, who is in the midst of a 10-month ban for alleged breaches of betting regulations.
Elsewhere, defensive duo Dan Burn and Matt Targett are sidelined with back and hamstring problems respectively, while wide man Jacob Murphy is set to be out until the new year after having dislocated his shoulder. Sven Botman is also a long term absentee, while Harvey Barnes is ruled out with a toe complaint. Elliot Anderson, Javier Manquillo, and Joe Willock are also expected to miss out, while Callum Wilson is currently battling a hamstring injury.
It’s not all doom and gloom on Tyneside, however; Sean Longstaff should be back after missing Newcastle’s last two matches due to a swollen ankle, while Emil Krafth is in contention after a combination of illness and ineligibility ruled him out of the midweek trip to Paris.
Newcastle United Predicted XI
Nick Pope; Kieran Trippier, Fabian Schar, Jamaal Lascelles, Tino Livramento; Bruno Guimaraes, Sean Longstaff, Joelinton; Miguel Almiron, Alexander Isak, Anthony Gordon.
Manchester United Team News
While nowhere near as far-reaching as Newcastle’s issues, Manchester United do have a smattering of their own injury concerns to contend with this weekend. Christian Eriksen, Casemiro, and Lisandro Martinez are all long-term absentees, while Mason Mount is suffering from a calf problem that should be enough to rule him out of the trip to Tyneside.
Jonny Evans remains doubtful, alongside Tyrell Malacia, while former Sunderland loanee Amad Diallo is still yet to make his return after sustaining a knee complaint in preseason. Jadon Sancho is unavailable following a high profile falling out with manager Erik ten Hag
Manchester United Predicted XI
Andre Onana; Aaron Wan-Bissaka, Harry Maguire, Victor Lindelof, Luke Shaw; Scott McTominay, Kobbie Mainoo; Antony, Bruno Fernandes, Marcus Rashford; Rasmus Hojlund.
