Newcastle United progress negotiations for €20m arrival – Entourage ‘want to close deal’…

Newcastle United are nearing the completion of a €20 million (£17 million) deal to sign Burnley goalkeeper James Trafford, with negotiations progressing swiftly and the player’s entourage eager to finalise the move.

The 21-year-old England U21 international has reportedly agreed personal terms with Newcastle, and discussions between the clubs have intensified following Burnley’s relegation from the Premier League. Despite a challenging season, Trafford remains highly regarded, with former Burnley manager Vincent Kompany describing him as “terrific” .

Newcastle’s interest in Trafford aligns with their strategy to invest in young talent with significant potential. The club has been actively seeking to bolster their squad, particularly in the goalkeeping department, as they prepare for the upcoming season. With current first-choice goalkeeper Nick Pope recovering from injury, securing a promising talent like Trafford is seen as a strategic move to ensure depth and competition within the squad.

The transfer is also part of Newcastle’s broader plan to comply with the Premier League’s Profitability and Sustainability Rules. Earlier in the year, the club generated funds through the sales of Miguel Almirón and Lloyd Kelly, which helped balance the books and allowed for reinvestment in key areas .

While the deal is not yet finalised, all parties are optimistic about reaching an agreement soon. Trafford’s potential arrival at St. James’ Park would mark a significant step in Newcastle’s ongoing efforts to build a competitive and youthful squad capable of challenging at the highest levels.
