Toto Wolff, Mercedes F1 boss, hopes his team will “take a step forward immediately” in Saudi Arabia this weekend after a “underwhelming” season-opening race in Bahrain, where they finished fifth and seventh.
Despite an overheating power unit due to a cooling mistake on the W15, Mercedes was the third-fastest team behind Red Bull and Ferrari.
Both drivers were satisfied with the balance earlier in the weekend, as well as the W15’s more stable platform.
“Unfortunately, on Saturday evening, our cooling performance did not meet our expectations. This forced us into control mode early on, resulting in tyre temperatures below optimal.
“That cost us the opportunity to demonstrate something closer to our full potential. It was a terrible start to the season, but we will learn from it.”
Wolff believes Mercedes will make progress as they understand more about their new competitor.
