Verstappen Claims He Could Win F1 Title in a McLaren

Max Verstappen, the reigning Formula 1 World Champion, has stirred debate with his recent assertion that he would have secured the 2024 championship even if he were driving for McLaren instead of Red Bull. The Dutchman, who clinched his third consecutive title this season, believes his performance and adaptability as a driver would have made him dominant regardless of the team he represented.

In an interview, Verstappen expressed confidence in his abilities, saying, “McLaren has had an incredible car this season, and with the improvements they’ve made, I have no doubt I could have won the title with them. In fact, I believe it might have been wrapped up even earlier than it was with Red Bull.”

McLaren has shown significant progress this season, with Lando Norris and Oscar Piastri delivering consistent podiums and even challenging for victories. However, Red Bull’s RB20 remained the benchmark car of the grid, helping Verstappen break records for the most wins in a season.

Verstappen’s comments have sparked mixed reactions within the F1 community. Supporters view his confidence as justified, given his skillset and racecraft, while critics argue that such statements undermine the collective effort of the Red Bull team in building the dominant car.

McLaren’s team principal, Andrea Stella, responded diplomatically, saying, “It’s flattering to hear Max’s comments, but Formula 1 is a team sport. Success comes from the synergy between car and driver, and we’re proud of what we’ve achieved this year with Lando and Oscar.”

As the sport heads into the offseason, Verstappen’s remarks highlight the ongoing discussion about the balance between driver skill and car performance in achieving championship success.
