Manchester City Statement & Boxing Community in Mourning After the Death of Ricky Hatton, Aged 46

Manchester, England — It is with deep sorrow that Manchester City has confirmed the passing of Ricky Hatton, the celebrated two-division world boxing champion and lifelong City supporter. Hatton, 46, was found dead at his home in Hyde, Greater Manchester, on Sunday morning. Greater Manchester Police have stated that his death is not being treated as suspicious.

Known affectionately as “The Hitman”, Hatton’s record—45 wins (32 by knockout) out of 48 professional bouts—stands as testament to a fighter who brought passion, grit, and genuine connection to his fans. Across a career spanning from 1997 to 2012, he claimed world titles at both light-welterweight and welterweight, and became a symbol of British boxing in the 2000s.

Hatton’s achievements in the ring include his memorable victories over Kostya Tszyu in 2005 and Jose Luis Castillo in 2007, as well as headline fights against Floyd Mayweather Jr. and Manny Pacquiao. While those latter clashes didn’t end in his favour, they only served to increase respect for his courage and determination.

However, Hatton’s life outside the ring was also marked by struggle. He was open about battling depression, alcohol dependency, and other challenges in the years after his retirement. These were part of the story of a man who, despite fame and achievement, was never far from the harsh realities many face.

Manchester City, who Hatton strongly supported, paid an emotional tribute in their statement:

> “Ricky was one of City’s most loved and revered supporters, who will always be remembered for a glittering boxing career that saw him win world titles at welterweight and light-welterweight. Everyone at the Club would like to send our heartfelt condolences to his family and friends at this difficult time.”

In light of his passing, City confirmed that there will be a minute’s appreciation before their Premier League match against Manchester United, to honour the life and legacy of Hatton.

Tributes have poured in across the world of boxing and sport more broadly. Fellow fighters, promoters, and fans alike have expressed grief and respect for someone many affectionately viewed as not just a champion, but a man of the people. His hardworking persona, his connection to fan culture, and his resilience made him not just a title-holder, but a figure who grounded the sport in the community.

Ricky Hatton’s death is a profound loss, not only for Manchester City, but for all those who admired his resilience, cheered for his victories, and respected his openness about life’s trials. His legacy will endure in the memories of his fights, his character, and the impact he had both inside and outside the ring. We extend our deepest condolences to his family, friends, and all who loved him.
