Man United wants to sign Bayer Leverkusen’s Odilon Kossounou

Man United are considering a move for Bayer Leverkusen centre-back Odilon Kossounou.

Manchester United are still rumored to be interested in signing a new central defender of some kind. It now appears, to me, that the Red Devils will sign a player in that area of the pitch this summer.

The more you think about it, the more logic it appears to make. United requires quality in that third of the field. Raphael Varane, like Victor Lindelof, could leave this summer. Lisandro Martinez’s ailments are mounting as well.

Several names have been linked with the vacant centre-back position at Old Trafford. Another name has emerged in the last 24 hours: Odilon Kossounou.

A Bayer Leverkusen centre-back who is quickly establishing himself as one of the best in the Bundesliga in his position. SportBILD’s Monday print issue (via Sport Witness) has the most recent information on Kossounou’s future.

According to their latest intel, United are ‘watching’ the 23-year-old, along with Tottenham Hotspur. Kossounou’s stock is rising quickly after a move to the Bundesliga club from Club Brugge back in 2021.

Xabi Alonso has helped the player develop into a ‘top defender’ and as a result, Kossounou now comes with a hefty price tag. Leverkusen will not consider anything less than £43m (50m euro) for the Ivory Coast international.

Leverkusen currently sit atop the league table right now, so prising Kossounou away from his current situation may be far easier said than done – particularly as both United and Spurs aren’t even guaranteed top four finishes as things stand.

You’d also expect other clubs to start showing an interest in the centre-back as we edge closer to the summer transfer window, meaning a major bidding war could be around the corner.

One thing is for certain, be it Kossounou or another defender, United will push hard to sign a centre-back over the coming months.

Do you think a Man United move to sign Odilon Kossounou would make sense? Let us know your thoughts in the comment box below.
