Tadej Pogačar is on the verge of making cycling history at Il Lombardia 2024. Already a three-time consecutive winner of the prestigious “Race of the Falling Leaves,” Pogačar could match Fausto Coppi’s iconic four consecutive wins from 1946 to 1949 if he triumphs on October 12. Pogačar’s dominance in the race since 2021 has seen him join the ranks of Coppi and Alfredo Binda, who both achieved three straight victories.
A win this year would place Pogačar in a rarefied class, equal to Coppi’s consecutive winning streak, a record that has stood for 75 years. Beyond that, Pogačar would also edge closer to surpassing Coppi’s overall record of five victories in Il Lombardia. Such a feat would solidify the Slovenian’s status as one of the greatest cyclists of all time, particularly as he continues to rack up accolades across various races, including five Monument wins.
Pogačar enters Il Lombardia 2024 following a stellar season. He secured victories in other major races, including Strade Bianche, Liège-Bastogne-Liège, and stage wins in the Tour de France. With his UAE Team Emirates squad supporting him, including Adam Yates and Marc Hirschi, Pogačar will be tough to beat, though challengers like Primož Roglič and Remco Evenepoel are expected to make the competition fierce.
If successful, Pogačar would not only mark his place in history but also add another victory to his already astonishing record, capping what has been one of his most successful seasons to date.
