A Look Ahead to Trade, Free Agency and Draft Period

Broncos Eye Sam Walker and Major Re-signings as Off-Season Heats Up

The Brisbane Broncos are entering a crucial off-season period as they look to solidify their roster ahead of the 2024 NRL season. With several key players up for contract renewals and the impending retirement of halfback Adam Reynolds, the club is focused on both retention and acquisition strategies.

One of the biggest moves on the horizon is the potential signing of Roosters star Sam Walker. Walker, originally from Queensland, has emerged as a target for the Broncos as a long-term replacement for Reynolds. Walker’s contract with the Roosters expires in late 2024, and he is expected to command a high salary—potentially exceeding $1 million per season. His history with the Broncos and his strong performance at the Roosters make him an attractive option for Brisbane.

However, the Broncos also face significant internal challenges. They need to manage their salary cap carefully, as several key players, including Reece Walsh, Selwyn Cobbo, and Kotoni Staggs, are all approaching the end of their contracts. Staggs, in particular, is reportedly seeking a long-term deal, and any hesitation in negotiations could see him test the open market.

The team has already made some adjustments, with Fletcher Baker joining from the Roosters, but they will lose Herbie Farnworth and Tom Flegler to the Dolphins in 2024.

Retaining young stars while securing critical acquisitions like Walker will be key to the Broncos’ long-term success.

As the November 1 free agency deadline approaches, the Broncos are expected to make several important decisions that could shape their future competitiveness.
