Leeds United could sign Southampton player today and it totally makes sense for all

Leeds United could make a surprise move to sign Everton star Mason Holgate who is currently on loan at Southampton as the Whites look to add defenders – and it is a move that suits all involved.

Holgate, 27, joined Southampton on loan from Everton in the summer but has since managed just seven outings under the guidance of Russell Martin. He can hardly argue with it, they are in incredible form.

But, he will be considering his future. Alex Crook claims that Leeds could look to sign Holgate before the deadline – even if a move would see him have to cancel his Saints loan and then join a promotion rival.

However, it suits all involved. Southampton would be opening up a loan space, and getting wages off their wage bill to spend elsewhere. Even if they are paying a portion, his wages are a huge £69k a week.

It suits Saints to cancel his loan. For Everton, they will want Holgate to be playing – in order to put him in a position where they could sell him come the summer. They want him to shine, for the shop window.

Mason Holgate joining Leeds suits all parties involved today

For Holgate himself, he will of course want game time. He will fancy himself as a Premier League player and he has shown that over the years. So, sitting on the bench in the Championship will not be pleasing.

Leeds need defensive additions and while Connor Roberts is expected to join from Burnley – Leeds are still want a centre-back. Holgate would cover the right of defence, and the middle of the back line.

So, Holgate cancelling his loan at Southammpton suits all four parties involved. Saints themselves, then Everton, Leeds and Holgate. The only issue, is that Southampton and Leeds are direct promotion rivals.
