Mahaney is one of the top 15 ranked players in the transfer portal.

New Kentucky head coach Mark Pope and the Wildcats have contacted one of the best players in the transfer portal.

His full list of initial suitors includes Duke, UConn, Kentucky, Florida, USC, Virginia, Villanova, Alabama, Creighton, Michigan, Ole Miss, California, Colorado, St. John’s, Xavier and Arkansas.

Mahaney, a 6-foot-3 guard and rising junior from Lafayette, California, played in 35 games and started 26 as a freshman during the 2022-23 season at Saint Mary’s as he helped the Gales earn a share of the West Coast Conference regular season title, pick up a No. 5 seed in the NCAA Tournament and reach the Round of 32. He averaged 13.9 points per game, 2.1 rebounds and 2.0 assists while shooting 42.8 percent from the field and 40.0 percent from three.

The year earned him WCC All-Freshman team and WCC First-Team All-Conference honors.

This past season he helped lead the Gales to a WCC regular season and tournament title and once again secure a No. 5 in the NCAA Tournament. He averaged 13.9 points per game for a second straight season, averaged 2.6 assists and 2.4 rebounds while shooting 38.6 percent from the field, 35.5 percent from three and 81.7 percent from the charity stripe.

He earned WCC First-Team All-Conference honors for a second straight year.

The 6-foot-3 guard will have two years of eligibility to use at his next school. He is currently the transfer portal’s 14th ranked player per 247sports and second best combo guard only behind Stanford transfer Kanaan Carlyle.
