Jesse Marsch has revealed that he wanted to sign Taiwo Awoniyi for Leeds United

Jesse Marsch has admitted that he wanted to recruit Taiwo Awoniyi for Leeds United before the striker moved to Nottingham Forest.

The former Leeds head coach was impressed by Awoniyi’s strike for Forest against West Ham United at the City Ground this past weekend.

Jesse Marsch wanted to sign Taiwo Awoniyi for Leeds United

Well, Jesse Marsch has said that he looked at signing Taiwo Awoniyi for Leeds United. The former Leeds head coach made the revelation on Monday Night Football on Sky Sports Premier League.

Marsch was in charge of Leeds from February 2022 until February 2023. The American, who wanted to sign Benjamin Sesko, replaced Marcelo Bielsa as the head coach of the Whites and managed to keep the team in the Premier League.

However, Leeds sacked Marsch in February 2023 with the team in danger of getting relegated to the Championship. The West Yorkshire club did end up in the bottom three of the Premier League table this season. They are now aiming for automatic promotion.

Marsch has now claimed that he wanted to sign Awoniyi from Union Berlin in the summer of 2022. The 26-year-old striker cost Nottingham Forest £17.5 million in transfer fees (Sky Sports).

Awoniyi scored for Forest in their 2-0 win against West Ham United at the City Ground in the Premier League this past weekend.

The Nigeria international found the back of the net in first-half injury time.

Marsch said about Awoniyi on Sky Sports Premier League (7:22 pm, February 19, 2024) while discussing his goal against West Ham: “Yeah, we looked at him for Leeds, and he came from the Bundesliga as well. Good player. Technically very good, strong, fast, great touch there.”

Taiwo Awoniyi doing well at Nottingham Forest

Taiwo Awoniyi has had injury problems at Nottingham Forest, but when he has been in form, he has played well and scored important goals.

The 26-year-old has made 11 starts and three substitute appearances in the Premier League for Forest this season. He has scored six goals and given two assists in those games.

The striker made 17 starts and 10 substitute appearances in the Premier League for the Reds last season. He scored 10 goals and provided one assist in those matches.
