When you do anything greater than or even equal to a Larry Legend accomplishment, you know you’re headed for greatness.
Tuesday night, in Boston’s 118-110 victory against the Nets, Jayson Tatum scored his 128th game of thirty or more points. In the process, he broke the team record for the most 30-point games in his seven seasons as a Celtic. The previous record, held by Larry Bird over seven seasons, was 127 such games.
Following the match, Tatum said that being named in the same exclusive company as Bird gave him a feeling of validation.
Tatum stated via CelticsCLNS, “It’s always an honor to be mentioned with some of the greatest players of all time.” “that’s evident that hearing that makes me shiver. It gives me a positive feeling. I suppose I’m doing something correctly.”
Although Bird had an incredible first seven years of his career, his scoring output significantly decreased in the latter few seasons due to back issues. As a result, Bird only completed 94 more games with 30 points or more throughout his final six years, for a total of 223.
Tatum has a good chance of topping Bird’s record for the most games with 30 points if he can stay healthy. He has also eclipsed Bird for the most 40-point games in his seven seasons as a Celtic, as can be seen here.
Due to their championship backgrounds, some people rank Tatum as the third-greatest Celtic in history, behind Bill Russell and Bird, while others choose John Havlicek, Kevin McHale, or even Paul Pierce. Tatum is still chasing his first ring, which the odds-on favorites, the Boston Celtics, are hoping to accomplish this spring.
