Alan Shearer has given his verdict on Nottingham Forest facing potential charges over alleged breaches of profit and sustainability rules (PSR) in their accounts for 2022-23 and has noted the situation at Everton and Newcastle United.
The Newcastle United legend has said that he feels for the Forest fans.
So, what has Alan Shearer said about Nottingham Forest and PSR? Let’s take a look.
Nottingham Forest charged
Well, Nottingham Forest are seemingly in hot water. As reported by BBC Sport this week, the Premier League has charged Forest for allegedly breaching its financial rules.
Forest have been referred “to an independent commission for alleged breaches of profit and sustainability rules in their accounts for 2022-23”.
BBC Sport has reported that Everton have also been charged with similar offences. The Toffees are already appealing against a 10-point deduction from a previous charge.
Forest have 14 days to appeal against the charge. The hearings must be concluded within 12 weeks and have to be held before May 24. The matter has to be resolved before June 1. So, in theory, Forest may not know their fate until after the current Premier League season has finished.
Alan Shearer reacts
Newcastle United legend Alan Shearer has given his take on the news.
The BBC Match of the Day pundit feels for the fans and has given his take on the situation of Everton and Nottingham Forest.
Shearer has also suggested that Newcastle United could have to sell one of the best players in the summer of 2024 to start spending money again.
Shearer said about Forest on The Rest is Football podcast: “The ramifications are huge. Yes, it’s the football clubs and the players, the staff, but again it’s the fans who are left to be frustrated, to suffer and show their frustrations because all they ever do is pay their good money and hope their club do well.
“Obviously they don’t want to see their club get punished. I have read that Everton feel they are getting hard done by, as they feel they are being done for the same punishment as what they have already been done for. So I get the frustration and everything that goes with it.
The thing is the clubs voted this in. They all voted this. So ultimately they have to stick by the rules, whether they think it’s sustainable or not.
“Look at the Newcastle situation right now. I imagine they were one of the clubs who voted it in, now they are desperate to go and spend money and it looks as though they can’t. It sounds as if next summer they will have to sell one of their big hitters.”
Forest are 15th in the Premier League table at the moment with 20 points from 20 matches. Nuno’s side are four points above the relegation zone and will face Brentford this weekend.
