The Memphis Grizzlies (1-7) lost 108-102 at FedExForum on Wednesday to the Miami Heat (4-4) despite mounting a late comeback in the fourth quarter.
For Memphis, Jaren Jackson Jr. scored 28 points, and Desmond Bane added 15 more. Despite shooting just 38.9 percent from the field, Marcus Smart led the Grizzlies with 11 points and seven assists.
With a season-high 30 points and 11 rebounds, including 14 of 16 free throws, Bam Adebayo led the Heat. Kyle Lowry also had a career-high 17 points, 11 rebounds, and nine assists. The Heat won their first game on the road this season with 15 points from Jimmy Butler and 14 from Haywood Highsmith. This victory came before a stretch of nine games away from home for the team.
On six different occasions, coming within two points of Miami, Memphis ultimately regained the lead following a three-pointer made by Santi Aldama early in the fourth quarter. The Grizzlies’ lead was increased to four points by Jackson Jr.’s jumper, but with 1:55 left, Miami rallied for a 28-13 run that gave them an 11-point advantage.
With 18.4 seconds remaining, Jaime Jaquez Jr. made his only 3-point attempt of the game, a corner three, to give Miami the victory. Memphis had scored eight straight points to close the gap to three.
Friday, Nov. 10, at 7 p.m. CT at FedExForum, is the Grizzlies’ second in-season tournament game against the Utah Jazz. ESPN 92.9 FM and Bally Sports Southeast will both broadcast the game.
