Regarding Michael Beale’s visit to a Rangers game at the conclusion of his manager career, Giovanni van Bronckhorst has spoken out.
After being linked to the position, which was still held by Van Bronckhorst at the time, Beale was seen in the stands at Ibrox for a match versus Aberdeen, which put pressure on the Dutch manager.
The former defender was later fired after poor results and replaced by Beale, with many speculating that a deal was already in place at the time of his visit. In an interview with FourFourTwo magazine (Issue 363, March 7), Van Bronckhorst said he wasn’t a fan of Beale’s antics.
“I don’t think you should really do that as a fellow manager,” he added.
“You should not sit in the stands during a sport if your teammate is under strain. “I never would have done that.”
Rangers got a dose of karma.
There’s little doubt that Rangers were aware of what was going on throughout the scenario, which included rumors regarding Van Bronckhorst’s future and Beale being linked to the position despite the fact that it was not vacant.
Beale was asked back to the club as a guest after leaving as assistant manager under Steven Gerrard, but the timing was all wrong.
The decision to sack Van Bronckhorst was right, because at the time the club were nine points behind Celtic in the title race and had just had the worst Champions League group stage performance in history.
But the situation just got dealt with horribly and considering Beale lasted only a year at the helm before failing miserably himself and being sacked, the club got dealt a dose of karma.
Now the club and team are in a far better position at the top of the SPFL with Philippe Clement in charge, so it worked out in the end. But this was a nasty moment in the recent history of the club.
