In a recent development, Monster Energy Yamaha Star Racing’s Eli Tomac has provided an update on his condition following a mishap during the Monster Energy Supercross event in Tampa. Tomac revealed that he suffered a thumb injury during free practice at the Denver Supercross, leading to a Bennett fracture and torn ligaments. This injury necessitated surgery to stabilize his thumb, sidelining him for the season finale in Salt Lake City and the opening rounds of the 2024 Pro Motocross Championship.
Reflecting on the incident, Tomac expressed his disappointment: “This is not the news I wanted to break to everyone, but at the Denver Supercross in free practice, I crashed on my thumb, and it’s resulted in a Bennett fracture and some torn ligaments that will require surgery to stabilize my thumb.” He acknowledged the difficulty of missing the initial races but remained optimistic about his return: “This is a tough one to swallow, knowing that I’m going to miss the opening rounds of motocross, but I’m optimistic I will be able to race the later portion of the outdoor season and the SMX rounds.”
The injury, which occurred during a practice session in Denver, has an estimated recovery timeline of six to eight weeks. This timeline means Tomac will miss the opening rounds of the Pro Motocross season, with a potential return aimed for the later stages of the outdoor season and the SuperMotocross (SMX) rounds.
Jeremy Coker, Monster Energy Yamaha Star Racing’s 450 Team Manager, commented on the situation: “It’s unfortunate to have Eli sit out this weekend and the opening rounds of the outdoor season, but our main focus is to have him back healthy. It’s just part of racing. We look forward to having him back to 100% and battling up front.”
Tomac’s absence opens opportunities for other competitors in the championship standings. Before his injury, he was tied with Chase Sexton for third place in the 450cc class of the Monster Energy AMA Supercross. Due to his withdrawal from the final race, he dropped to fourth place.
As Tomac focuses on his recovery, fans and the racing community eagerly anticipate his return to the track. His determination and optimism suggest that he will come back stronger for the latter part of the season. In his own words, “We will be back stronger in the later half of this season.”
The Pro Motocross Championship is set to commence on May 25 at Fox Raceway in Pala, California. While Tomac will miss the initial rounds, his team and supporters remain hopeful for a successful return later in the season.
