San Francisco 49ers star linebacker Dre Greenlaw suffered a terrible non-contact injuryin the first half of Sunday’s Super Bowl LVIII loss to the Kansas City Chiefs.
Greenlaw was simply making his way on to the field with the rest of his defense when he suffered the now infamous ruptured Achilles. Almost immediately, players on both teams knew that something was not right.
Chiefs quarterback and eventual Super Bowl MVP Patrick Mahomes pointed out the injury to his teammates. “Hey, 57 got hurt. Fifty-seven got hurt over there,” Mahomes said.
San Francisco linebacker Fred Warner could be heard screaming “no” over and over again inside Allegiant Stadium. Meanwhile, 49ers head coach Kyle Shanahan was beyond himself as events unfolded in the first half. “Did Dre just get hurt running out on the field?”

This ended up being an absolutely devastating blow for the 49ers as they fell to Kansas City by the score of 25-22 in overtime.
Star Chiefs tight end Travis Kelce was held to a single catch for one yard with Dre Greenlaw as the primary man in coverage. Once Greenlaw went down, Kelce dominated backup linebacker Oren Burks and others. He finished with eight catches for 92 yards in the second half and overtime.
Beyond how this impacted the game, this was just brutal for a player in Greenlaw who has proven to be among the most-important players on the 49ers’ defense. He now has a long rehab road ahead of himself. That’s for sure.
