Çaykur Rizespordirector Hasan Yavuz Bakır hopes a deal can be struck with Nottingham Forest to ensure Jonjo Shelvey remains with the Turkish club.
The 32-year-old has been with the Super Lig club since September and since he was bombed out of the first team squad by Steve Cooper. Shelvey has not played for Forest since April 23 but has been a key player for his current club.
The former Newcastle and Liverpool midfielder has made 29 league appearances this term, scored twice and added six assists, as Rizespor sit in eighth.
Even with Nuno Espirito Santo now in charge at the City Ground the prospect of Shevley being reintegrated seems remote, particularly with attention on the FFP calculation. A permanent move to Turkey could well suit all parties, particularly with Hasan Yavuz Bakır expressing their interest.
“Jonjo Shelvey is happy in Rize and we are happy with Shelvey’s performance,” he is quoted as saying in Turkish outlet Ajansspor. “However, Shelvey’s contract with his club Nottingham Forest continues. If financial conditions arise, we will add Shelvey to our squad.”
Shelvey joined Forest from Newcastle in January 2023 and has another year left on his contract. In total he has played only eight times for Forest and was not included in this season’s Premier League squad.
