Clement Has The Tools To Succeed, According To Gers’ Famous Five Top Chart

Rangers were struggling prior to the arrival of Philippe Clement, lurching from one poor performance to the next.

In and out of possession, the midfield in particular appeared shapeless, lacking energy, pace, creativity, or any real purpose.

A fascinating piece of analysis by Bill Orr, Raith Rovers’ head of performance analysis, using WyScout has produced an interesting set of results, with Philippe Clement’s Rangers appearing to be a different animal.

Philippe Clement has midfield tools to get Rangers firing

Looking at the SPFL’s most progressive midfielders, Orr has established that Rangers quintet John Lundstram, Ryan Jack, Todd Cantwell, Nicolas Raskin and Jose Cifuentes, in that order, top the chart.

Defining the analysis, Orr explains what it means as:

“In a nutshell it’s moving the ball into a more threatening position of play via a progressive pass, run or a pass to the final 3rd, and doing it well.”

We may not have seen any success during Michael Beale’s tenure but, what this means for Philippe Clement and his Rangers team, is that he has a core of midfielders who are capable of taking control of the ball and making something happen.

The perception that the squad wasn’t good enough, especially the midfield, never really sat right.

Lundstram and Jack, for example, had been the foundation for so many of the Europa League performances when we got to the final and they dominated some pretty impressive opponents – Jude Bellingham and Marco Reuss included.

It has been a feature of Philippe Clement’s early games, Rangers playing with a high energy midfield looking to get the ball forward quickly and drive at opposition teams.

In January, the Belgian boss will want to start to bring in his own players, however, at the moment, he doesn’t have to worry about the midfield.

With Tom Lawrence fit again and Ianis Hagi still contracted to Rangers, Clement’s vision of Rangers is in safe hands.
