Cole Palmer, a Chelsea player, makes his England debut ten months after being linked with Rangers.

The 21-year-old midfielder came off the bench in the Three Lions’ 2-0 European Championship qualification win over Malta.

Cole Palmer’s first England cap came after a run of four goals in five Premier League games, despite only getting approximately 30 minutes to impress.

While Cole Palmer was still at Manchester City, Rangers reportedly tabled a loan bid for the offensive midfielder in January.

Rangers targeted Cole Palmer

Rangers reportedly made their move for Cole Palmer last season as the transfer deadline approached.

The claim originated in The Sun’s Live Transfer Blog [31/01/23 11:15] before Rangers fan media outlet Heart & Hand claimed sources within the club had rubbished the link. Palmer stayed at City that winter.

Eventually, Chelsea would come in for Cole Palmer in the summer with Manchester City unable to give guarantees over game-time.

Now an up and running regular feature in the Chelsea side, Palmer’s recent run of goalscoring earned him an England call and the confident youngster will be aiming to stay there.

It all suggests that any proposed Rangers bid was perhaps a little ambitious whilst some might see the club being named alongside the player as a positive.

Loan market has aided Rangers lately

Whilst there is some mixed reporting with regards a potential Rangers bid for Cole Palmer, the Ibrox side have used the lone market strongly recently.

The club currently have Senegalese striker Abdallah Sima on their books and impressing on loan from Premier League Brighton.

Rangers also enjoyed USA international Malik Tillman on loan from Bayern last season – where he scored 12 goals – and has been missed from the squad this campaign.

If the Gers can secure this sort of first-team ready burgeoning elite-level talent on a routine basis, it can only boost the team.

Especially if they can go on have the same impact that Malik Tillman had and Abdallah Sima is having.

Whilst there is some inevitable heartbreak attached to the loan deals which do well, see the Malik Tillman fiasco this summer, there are clear and obvious benefits.

Rangers offer a competitive level of football in a league where they will dominate the bulk of matches, there is a pressure to win and there is also European football.

It’s a solid choice for these kinds of players and whilst Rangers appear to have missed out on Cole Palmer, the young England debutant’s profile is very much the type we should be after.
