Browns Film Analysis: Should Joe Flacco Keep His Starting Job

Cleveland suffered a heartbreaking loss in Los Angeles on Sunday but escaped with a potential quarterback replacement in veteran Joe Flacco.

Looks can be deceiving, and the 36-19 final score in the Week 13, Browns loss to the Rams definitely paints a misleading picture about how close the game really was.

Prior to a costly fourth-quarter interception from veteran Joe Flacco, Cleveland had cut the Rams lead to one, 20-19 and was well positioned to come away with the victory. Instead, the untimely turnover fueled a 16-0 run by Los Angeles to end the game.

Despite the interception, Flacco proved what he said when he signed with the Browns a few weeks back – he does still have something left in the tank. Over 250 yards and two touchdowns is nothing to sneeze at for the 38-year-old, and worth asking whether or not he should start under center the rest of the way?

On the flip side, the once mighty Browns defense has shown some cracks in recent weeks, and there’s an alarming theme emerging where they allow over 30 points per game on the road versus the mere 10 points per game allowed at home. Not only that, but for the first time in his career, Myles Garrett went without a tackle as concerns over his effectiveness while he battles a shoulder injury loom large entering the home stretch of the season.

In the latest episode of Brownie Breakdowns, Anthony Moeglin and I get into the details on what wasn’t working on Sunday, and conversely what allowed for Flacco to be so effective? It becomes evident throughout this film study session that Kevin Stefanski dialed up a very straightforward and deliberate offense for the veteran and it was effective.

That leaves us asking the exact question everyone wants an answer to by the end: should the Browns stick with Flacco or go back to Dorian Thompson-Robinson once he clears the concussion protocol?
