Morgan Geekie Donates Entire $15.9M Bonus and Sponsorship Earnings to Build Homeless Shelter in Strathclair

In a stunning and heartwarming act of generosity, Boston Bruins forward Morgan Geekie has donated his entire $15.9 million in recent bonus and sponsorship earnings to support the construction of a homeless shelter and housing project in his hometown of Strathclair, Manitoba, located near the Wisconsin border.
At a press conference earlier today, Geekie, 27, announced that the funds will go directly toward the creation of a 150-unit housing development, complete with 300 emergency shelter beds, aimed at tackling chronic homelessness in the rural community and its surrounding areas.
> “I’ve seen the effects of homelessness firsthand growing up, and I knew if I ever had the means, I’d give back in a meaningful way,” said Geekie. “No one deserves to sleep on a sidewalk.”
Geekie, known for his grit on the ice and humility off it, emphasized that this was not a publicity stunt but a personal mission rooted in his childhood experiences. “Growing up, there were people I knew—good people—who just didn’t have a break. The older I got, the more I realized this was a system problem, and someone had to step up.”
The project, which is expected to break ground later this fall, will include not only shelter beds but support services such as mental health counseling, job training, and addiction recovery programs. Geekie has also partnered with local nonprofits and the Strathclair community board to ensure the initiative is both sustainable and deeply rooted in local needs.
The news has sparked an outpouring of admiration across the hockey world and beyond. Bruins head coach Jim Montgomery called it “the most selfless act I’ve seen from any player,” while NHL Commissioner Gary Bettman issued a statement praising Geekie as “a role model for athletes everywhere.”
On social media, fans from Boston to Winnipeg flooded timelines with messages of praise. One tweet read: “Morgan Geekie just became a legend—not just for his play, but for his heart.”
Construction on the new facility is expected to be completed by late 2026. In the meantime, Geekie says he’ll continue to advocate for solutions to homelessness, urging fellow athletes to use their platforms for good.
