Gunnar Henderson Donates $25 Million to Transform Historic House into Shelter for Homeless Youth

Baltimore Orioles star shortstop Gunnar Henderson has made headlines off the field with a remarkable act of generosity, donating a staggering $25 million to convert a historic property into a state-of-the-art shelter for homeless youth. The facility, set to open next spring, will offer safe housing, educational programs, mental health services, and career training for vulnerable young people in the community.
Henderson, 23, revealed during a press conference that the idea came from personal conversations with youth advocates and visits to underserved neighborhoods in Baltimore. “I’ve been blessed beyond measure through baseball, but I never want to forget the responsibility that comes with it,” Henderson said. “No child should have to wonder where they’ll sleep at night. This shelter is about giving them stability, opportunity, and hope.”
The three-story home, a once-abandoned landmark, will be fully renovated with dorm-style rooms, study spaces, a community kitchen, and an outdoor recreation area. Local charities and youth organizations will partner with the shelter to provide round-the-clock support. The project is expected to house up to 80 young people at a time, with a focus on those aged 14–21 who have experienced homelessness or aged out of foster care.
Baltimore Mayor Brandon Scott praised Henderson’s generosity, calling it “a transformative gift that will change lives for generations.” Community leaders have also applauded the move, noting that it comes amid a surge in homelessness among young people nationwide.
This is not Henderson’s first foray into philanthropy—he has previously funded youth baseball programs and scholarships—but it is by far his largest charitable commitment to date.
Construction is set to begin later this year, with the shelter aiming to open its doors by April 2026—marking a powerful new legacy for one of baseball’s brightest y
oung stars.
