Max Verstappen Hints at F1 Retirement After Next Contract Amid Season Challenges
Formula 1 champion Max Verstappen recently surprised fans and the racing community with his remarks on his future in the sport. Although he is signed with Red Bull Racing through 2028, Verstappen indicated that his next career move—whether renewing with Red Bull or joining another team—will likely be his last in Formula 1. He clarified, “My next step, if there is one, will be my last,” underscoring his long-standing loyalty to Red Bull but leaving open the possibility of exploring options beyond his current team.
Verstappen’s announcement comes during a challenging period for Red Bull. After winning seven out of the season’s first ten races, his performance has stalled, with Red Bull facing mechanical issues and stiffer competition. Verstappen recently ended the first practice at the Mexican Grand Prix in 19th place due to engine troubles, which he described as a “day to forget.” Such setbacks have sparked speculation about his commitment to the team long-term.
While Mercedes and Aston Martin have shown interest in Verstappen, the Dutch driver expressed a desire to remain with a single team for his career. “I don’t want to be part of four or five different teams,” he noted, emphasizing the importance of stability and a strong team bond in his career decisions. Verstappen’s advisor, Helmut Marko, also hinted at a contract clause allowing him an early exit if Red Bull’s performance drops, adding to the intrigue around his plans.
For now, Verstappen remains focused on finishing this season, where he leads the standings by 52 points. His future beyond 2028, however, is increasingly uncertain.
