Boston Mayor Michelle Wu designates April 14 ‘Mike Gorman Day’

April 14 will be the legendary Celtics broadcaster’s final regular season game.

Mike Gorman is being honored by the city of Boston two days before calling his final regular season Celtics game.

Mayor Michelle Wu declared April 14 “Mike Gorman Day” in Boston on Friday. The Hall of Famer and Celtics play-by-play voice will call his last regular season game on that day.

“This proclamation is a step by the City to recognize Gorman’s positive contributions, legacy and service to Boston after 43 years of calling Boston Celtics games,” per a press release.

Gorman is set to retire following the Celtics’ playoff run, which he announced last summer. He has called home games during the 2023-24 season.

Throughout his final year, NBC Sports Boston has commemorated Gorman’s career with a series of videos that have been aired during Boston’s home contests. They have ranged from throwbacks to his most memorable calls to a sit-down interview between himself and Doc Rivers.

Gorman has sat down with Drew Carter at Boston restaurants in two of the videos for a series dubbed “Meet Ups with Mike and Drew.” Carter will take Gorman’s role beginning in 2024-25, though he has been the primary play-by-play voice for road games this season.

NBC Sports Boston will cap off its celebration on April 14 when the Celtics play the Washington Wizards at TD Garden. The network will begin coverage of Gorman’s final regular season game beginning at 12 p.m. Eastern Time. A halftime ceremony honoring Gorman will take place.
