When Barcelona lost Sergio Busquets in the summer, everyone knew it was going to be a huge blow, for the iconic midfielder was one of a kind.
Finding a replacement for the former Spain captain was never going to be easy and the Blaugrana’s troubled finances made the task much harder.
Eventually, the club had to settle with re-signing Oriol Romeu from Girona after having targeted other stars like Joshua Kimmich, Marcelo Brozovic, and Martin Zubimendi.
Things began well with Romeu slotting in seamlessly in Barcelona’s setup under Xavi, with his experience and know-how helping him settle in. But it has gone downhill for the Spaniard in recent months.
Xavi has lost his trust in Romeu
In fact, Fernando Polo of Mundo Deportivo is reporting that Barcelona manager Xavi Hernandez has lost some of his trust in Romeu already.
The 32-year-old is the only natural pivot in the Barça squad at the moment, but has lost his place in the starting lineup in recent weeks, forcing Xavi to utilise one of Frenkie de Jong or Ilkay Gundogan in the deeper roles regularly.
Indeed, Romeu has played in just five of the Catalans’ last 15 official matches, despite the fact that the likes of Gavi, Pedri, and De Jong have had injuries during this period.
The player himself is seemingly going through a crisis of confidence, having dropped a disappointing display in the game against Royal Antwerp, where his two errors led to two goals for the Belgian champions.
Romeu will not be sold
It may be so that Xavi does not retain the same level of confidence in Romeu as he did earlier and that the midfielder’s form has plummeted.
But, as things stand, there are no plans to sell Romeu in the January transfer window despite the fact that Barcelona intend to sign a new midfielder in the upcoming January transfer window.
There had been interest in Romeu from Girona, but the Catalan club are no longer considering his signing either. As such, there is no way that the Spaniard would be leaving the Blaugrana next month.
