While the 2023/24 season is barely into its first third, Barcelona have already identified areas of problems for their team.
The left and right-back roles are definitely one to be concerned about. Joao Cancelo is on loan, and purchasing him permanently will be expensive, while Alejandro Balde does not have an able deputy.
Not to forget, both Marcos Alonso and Sergi Roberto’s contract expire in the summer.
The forward line has also been underperforming, and Barcelona need to find a permanent solution to their left-wing problems.
However, more than all of these, the defensive midfield is Barça’s biggest issue. The Catalans have been left without an able player in that role since Sergio Busquets’ departed the club in the summer of 2023.
They did end up getting Oriol Romeu from Girona for €3.5 million, but the player was never considered a long-term solution to their problems. Further, the Spaniard’s performances have already hit a poor run of form.
Barcelona, as such, have set their eyes on Feyenoord’s Mats Wieffer, according to a report from SPORT.
The 23-year-old has been on Barcelona’s radar for a while. The club have scouted him on multiple occasions and are very happy with their reports.
Wieffer is considered to be very technically gifted, and can play as a no. 6 and in a more advanced role as an interior. He is also athletically gifted, at nearly 1.9 metres, and can give most oppositions a run for their money in the middle of the park.
The Dutchman has renewed his contract until 2027, which means negotiating for him will be difficult. That said, he should still be less expensive than some of the other names on the market like Martin Zubimendi or Joshua Kimmich.
