Novak Djokovic is set to make yet more history at the top of the ATP Rankings while Jannik Sinner hit a new milestone for Italian tennis with a rise to world No 2.
Despite withdrawing from the Miami Open as part of a more targeted schedule, Djokovic had enough of a cushion to guarantee a record-extending 419th week at the summit of men’s tennis.
That has allowed the Serbian to break yet another historic tennis record as he looks to completely dominate the ATP history books, as he is now set to become the oldest singles world No 1 in the men’s game.
Djokovic will break the record that Roger Federer set back in June 2018 when the Swiss returned to No 1 for a solitary week, a 310th and final week at the very top of the game.
Federer was just shy of his 37th birthday when he set that record and with Djokovic turning 37 next month, he has the opportunity to extend this new record even further.
Meanwhile, Sinner had previously missed the chance to overtake Carlos Alcaraz as world No 2 at the BNP Paribas Open a fortnight ago, losing to the Spaniard in the last four at Indian Wells; his only defeat so far this season.
But with Alcaraz falling in the last eight in Miami to Dimitrov, the Australian Open champion was able to usurp his rival by winning his second career Masters 1000 title, and first in Florida after final defeats in 2021 and 2023.
A third title of 2024 and 13th career victory overall sees Sinner become the first Italian player in history – male or female – to ever be ranked as high as second in the singles rankings.
The 22-year-old previously made history by moving to No 3 in the rankings, beating the record of No 4 jointly held by Adriano Pannatta and Francesca Schiavone in the ATP and WTA Rankings respectively
