Fulham Nears £21 Million Deal for Aston Villa’s Diego Carlos
Fulham is reportedly close to finalizing a £21 million deal with Aston Villa for the transfer of Brazilian center-back Diego Carlos. This potential move comes as Fulham seeks to strengthen their defensive line ahead of the new Premier League season, aiming to build on their solid mid-table finish last year.
Diego Carlos, who joined Aston Villa from Sevilla in the summer of 2022 for a reported fee of £26 million, has experienced a challenging time at Villa Park. The 30-year-old was brought in with high expectations, having been a crucial part of Sevilla’s success in La Liga and their 2020 UEFA Europa League triumph. However, his tenure at Aston Villa has been marred by injuries, including a ruptured Achilles tendon that sidelined him for a significant portion of the 2022-2023 season.
Despite these setbacks, Carlos has shown flashes of the form that made him a standout in Spain. His physical presence, aerial ability, and experience are qualities that Fulham manager Marco Silva is eager to add to his squad. Silva believes that Carlos could be a key figure in solidifying Fulham’s defense, which conceded 53 goals in the Premier League last season.
For Aston Villa, the decision to offload Carlos could be seen as a way to recoup some of the investment made in the player, while also freeing up funds and squad space for new additions as they look to build on their strong finish last season under Unai Emery.
Negotiations between the two clubs have reportedly progressed well, with the transfer fee agreed upon at £21 million. If the deal goes through, it will mark a significant move for both clubs. Fulham will be hoping that Carlos can stay fit and bring the solidity they need at the back, while Aston Villa will look to reinvest the funds in strengthening their squad further.
