LSU star Angel Reese is not afraid to speak her mind, which she did again following the Tigers’ win over UCLA in the Sweet 16 on Saturday.
Asked how proud she was of her teammates for picking her up as she dealt with foul trouble, Reese pushed back on the narrative that LSU is a one-woman show or collection of individuals.
“Apparently people thought we were just a bunch of individuals so we took that personal, and we do have stars on our team, we do, and people don’t think that we’re supposed to gel together,” Reese said. “We’ve gelled together all year. Some nights it’s me, some nights it’s Neese, some nights it’s Flau’jae. It’s so many different players on any given night, and people don’t realize that.
“Like we have a purpose, and our purpose is to get to the championship, and we don’t care who scores. I didn’t lose confidence in my team. I knew they were going to come out and continue to do what they do because we have great players on our team. The best team won tonight. Also the best individuals on the team won, as well. Let’s get that straight.”
Reese managed a double-double (16 points, 11 rebounds) against the Bruins despite fouling out, but it was guard Flau’jae Johnson (24 points, 12 rebounds) who led the way. Aneesah Morrow also added 17 points.
With the win, the Tigers moved on to the Albany 2 Regional Final, where they will face Caitlin Clark and Iowa tonight for the right to move on to the Final Four.
“She’s just a great player,” Johnson told reporters regarding Clark. “Last year I got to switch on her early in the game, and I was like, she’s not going to pull that for real, and then she pulled it for real from half court, and she made it. I was like, whoa. Kind of had spurts and moments getting in switches with her.
